Richardson Family | Washington, DC Family Photographer

It’s Friday once again and I have yet another gorgeous family session to share with you!

This time it’s the Richardson Family! I cannot get over how adorable this family is. Mom and dad are SO in love and baby girl is just as cute as she can be ^_^

I really enjoyed this session because I worked with Morgan earlier this year while I was in Chicago for our group mentor session so I was super happy when she reached out for family photos! The day of the session came and weather had other plans :/ Our morning time had to be pushed back to the afternoon but I’m glad we did because the light was delightful :)

So sit back and enjoy the beauty that is the Richardson Family!

Rhodes Family | Washington, DC Family Photographer

So how ironic is it that the very day after I post about my struggles with routine (in what’s supposed to be Daily Dose December) that I miss a post? Lol

I was all set to share an awesome wedding with you guys too! But I will save it for next Wedding Wednesday :) Today I have an adorable family to share with you as I get a head start on Family Friday… YES I love alliteration! Lol.

I got together with the beautiful Rhodes family at the end of the summer for their family session and honestly they’re so sweet you may get a toothache looking at these pictures. They had the coolest shirts as well! They were initially going to go with superhero shirts, but ended up instead wearing black “superhero” tees- much cooler indeed :)

Check out their fab session!

The Struggle With Routine | Truthy Tuesday

I’ve recently come to realize something: Nothing gets done without a routine.

image

I’m sure you may immediately be able to come up with certain scenarios and situations where this can be proved untrue, but think about it… For sustained effectiveness, routines are imperative.

The earth revolves around the sun at a regular interval to sustain life on earth, you need to eat regularly to stay alive and healthy, you need to bathe regularly to stay clean and free of disease, you need to practice regularly if you want to get better at your hobby, career, passion… Those are general things I know, but think about it! Suppose you purposely just ate one meal, or only a few each week and thought “that oughta do it”, no that’d be crazy! You want to eat several meals EVERY day to not only maintain your physical strength but also because food tastes good lol.

Over the years I’ve come to realize a few things about myself and one of which is that I am fiercely against routines. I don’t like eating the same thing all the time, I have to change my hair frequently, I don’t like wearing the same outfit twice (I have a very mix and matchable wardrobe for this reason lol)… so as a result, it is VERY hard to stick to schedules.

Recently I’ve been trying to explore this element of my personality a bit more and I’ve just come to the conclusion that I may never love routines. But that doesn’t mean I can’t make use of them to benefit me. So I’ve decided to begin my journey to try and make mindful routines apart of my life :)

Morning routines help people get their mind ready for the day, productivity routines signal to the brain that it’s time to work, evening routines help wind down from the day and prepare you for a restful night’s sleep. You absolutely can, and many do (like I’ve been), going through life without any of these “routines”, but for true effectiveness in all areas of life, routines are without a doubt the best way to go! And though you may not realize it, you do have a routine now. Do you wake up and immediately check your phone? Hit snooze a few more times… sit on the edge of your bed for a few minutes… start replying to emails, etc. Though the routine may not be the best, it is however a routine because we are pattern-seeking creatures :) So my goal is to turn my mindless habits into mindful routines.

I want to greet the day free of technology and not overwhelm myself with what’s going on in the lives of others first thing in the morning or last thing before I go to sleep. So that’s one change. This morning I sat down for the first time and wrote down a workable sleep schedule so I can start to build an effective morning and evening routine to help me keep it. Me and sleep have an interesting relationship lol… I love sleep, but I never seem to get enough of it because I don’t manage my time well, so I’m always up late! But I am going to make a concerted effort this week to stick to my sleep schedule *strong arm emoji* lol.

So this Truthy Tuesday ended up reading more like a journal entry than anything but I’m okay with that lol. I know I’m not the only one that struggles with routines so I’d love to hear from you as well! What have what have some of your struggles been in getting and maintaining a routine? What have you found helpful in establishing mindful routines either in the morning, for productivity, or… anything really!

I know this won’t be easy but I’m excited and my goal is to be in a healthier space both mentally and physically and I know this is heading in the right direction :)

‘Till next time!

PS- Check out this book. It’s very helpful if you too are looking to establish a creative routine to help with productivity.

A Colorful Music Monday | OK Go

Happy Monday!

Back in action this week with a full week of newness for the blog :) Gonna start out today with a colorful Music Monday share!

This video?! <- Video link in case the embed below doesn’t show up

I canNOT get over the overflowing amounts of awesomeness in this video! I remember seeing this for the first time a few years ago and just being in awe at the superbly matched wardrobe with the scenery and the beautiful song. I can’t remember if this video was my first introduction to OK Go, or if I found it later, but I do know that it has not stopped being one of my most favorite things ever lol.

My love for color, texture, and artful coordination fuel my love for this video aaaand this beautiful work by Imani Amos from her #colorFULL #trippytriptychs project. She totally deserves her own post, but I am obligated to share these awesome images because they are so perfect and remind me of this video so that’s my excuse ;)

I love that OK Go always has a creative and colorful music video to accompany their songs. Here is another one of my favorites, but (if you have time) go check out their YouTube channel and all of their awesome videos!

I say if you have time because you might just find yourself losing 20+ minutes watching videos. Some of them are downright mesmerizing… The symmetry, colors, choreography, music… everything is awesome! <- bonus points for you if you sang The Lego Movie song just then lol.

That’s it for today!

I hope you enjoyed this colorful Music Monday post :) Stay tuned for Truthy Tuesday tomorrow!

Briscoe Family | Washington, DC Family Photographer

Happy Friday ya’ll! It’s the end of the week and I have a super special family to share with you guys today- the Briscoe family!

I have been working with this beautiful family for the past FIVE years! I am super thankful for loyal clients because I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for them. The Briscoe’s have stuck with me from the very beginning- even through my style refinements and rebranding… they hung in there and I truly appreciate that. Each year we get together for fall minis so I figured since we’re at a nice milestone year, we should take a look back :)

2010
Our first year together! Joshua was a very energetic toddler and I remember having to run around and have everyone be super active to get pleasant expressions from him- but it worked! :) I was also still finding my style so you don’t see this vintagey look too much now.

2011
This time I opted for something a tad urban. Looking at this, I definitely see my style was affected by other photographers I looked up to at the time, but I still got a slight pop of color in there :) The boys grew so much in one year! We still had to keep Joshua fairly active though lol.

imageimageimageimage

2012
I started to feel like I was coming into my own with truly being purposeful in incorporating environmental elements while still capturing real emotion :) I can’t get enough of how well these colors worked together- such a perfect fall mini!

imageimageimageimage

2013
Jan opted for something simple and cool this time and I followed suit with the location choice :) Love these t-shirts! And we see Joshua has not lost his spark ;)

imageimageimage

Aaand that brings us to this year- 2014. year 5 together! By now you see how I love coordinating my subjects to their surroundings and this session is no different :)

I can’t get over how big the boys are now (while mom and dad look younger than ever)! Even though I see them every year, it’s still amazing to me watching their family grow and I’m thankful to be trusted with documenting these changes year after year
